Funkytown on No. 5 of Top 100 Disco Songs of All-Time

news15.07 FT-AllTimeChartsA revision of the original dance charts in order to include downloads and online internet sales changed the charts to a great degree.

According to Billboard Publications, Funkytown with Cynthia Johnson on lead vocals lands on No. 5 of the official 2013 list of "The Top 100 Disco Songs of All-Time".

Only Gloria Gaynor with "I Will Survive" on first postion, followed by "Le Freak" of Chic, "Stayin´Alive" by the Bee Gees, and "Super Freak" by Rick James dominated Funkytown.

Songs were chosen for this list based on their initial popularity, as well as their lasting popularity down through the years, and on their overall impact on the genre.

35 years ago Funkytown climbed to No.1

news15.05 Funkytown-BillboardNo1-35yearsEntering the Hot 100 at #89 on March 29, 1980, “Funkytown” will climb to the top of the chart nine weeks later. It was on this day May 31 in 1980 when the single with Cynthia Johnson on lead vocals began its run on No. 1 on the Billboard Magazine Hot 100. ‪The song held the top spot for 4 weeks.

The song Funkytown also became a huge hit worldwide, topping the charts in 28 countries around the world.

Within a short timeframe the single sold several million copies in the US alone, also sending the accompanying album “Mouth To Mouth” to number five on the Billboard Top 200 (number five R&B), and earned a Platinum certification from the RIAA in the same year.

 

 

Cynthia rocks the house in Hollywood

Cynthia Johnson elected as Honoree of “Women Unite to Win”

news15.03 CynthiaJohnson-performing copyrightMegabienEntertainmentCynthia Johnson has been elected as one of the Honorees of this years “Women Unite to Win”, an annual Women's Appreciation Banquet that addresses a yearly alternating important cause involving women in the community who have motivated, educated and empowered others.

This year´s event has selected HIV/AIDS as its subject of interest. The banquet shall serve as a platform to bring awareness about this disease to the Minnesota area and to communicate the importance of educating the community about prevention, treatment and care. Besides its informational aspect, it also aims to raise funds with a portion to be donated to the “Aliveness Project”, a local HIV/AIDS organization.

Each year “Women Unite to Win” honors some of Minnesota's phenomenal women. This year the state´s most prominent female musical legends are credited; outstanding women who have helped to pave the way for many musicians, empowered and educated fellow citizens, and inspired and motivated people in difficult, critical phases of their lives.

The banquet is held at the Radisson Blu Hotel at the Mall of America in Bloomington, Minnesota on March 14, 2015. Organizer is the non-profit National  Empowerment Group. The event is supported by Radisson Blu Hotels & Resorts, Mall of America and BMA.

 

Release Anniversary of Funkytown Single

This month marks the 35th anniversary of Funkytown´s release as a single, the most popular song from the album “Mouth to Mouth” with Cynthia Johnson on lead vocals.

After a fulminous start in the US, the hit went on to top the international charts, from pop over R&B to disco. A never-ending song that spans generations and genres, keeps finding its way into numerous films, TV programs, commercials, sports events, video games, apps, classical theatre plays and so on, and has sold copies in over 90 countries around the globe earning gold and platinum certifications.

Till today, Funkytown, driven by Cynthia Johnson´s remarkable voice, remains the biggest hit ever from Minnesota's hot and varied music scene, outselling both Prince and Bob Dylan singles.

The enduring appeal of Cynthia Johnson´s voice not only stays alive with Funkytown, but her resilience can also be enjoyed on more current releases such as Johnson´s album “All That I Am” or her new album “Shake” due for release later this year.

Cynthia Johnson just completed the first tunes of her new record SHAKE, produced by award winning producer Mark Howard and independent production company megabien entertainment.

The recording sessions took place in LA and were accompanied by some of the most appreciated session musicians, among them bass player Daryl Johnson (The Rolling Stones, the Neville Brothers, Bob Dylan, Emmylou Harris, etc.).

Chart-topping anniversary for Funkytown

Today in 1980, Lipps, Inc. with Cynthia Johnson on lead vocals went on to No. 1 on the US single charts with the song “Funkytown” and began its four week residence at the top, sending such notable artists as Blondie (Call Me) and Paul McCartney (Coming Up) off to the second and third position.

The popular song holds a unique record for reaching No. 1 in 28 countries around the world, among them Canada, France, Germany, Switzerland, Australia, Israel, Netherlands, Norway, Denmark or Spain, more than any other song before. And it took 25 years before this record could be broken, which was by Madonna´s number one hit “Hung Up”.

The hit went on to top the international charts, from pop to R&B to disco, spanning generations and genres. Till today, the infectious tune with Johnson´s notable lead vocals keeps reinventing itself for film, television, branding, sporting events, video games, and many other public realms.

 

Performance at RetroRama

Cynthia Johnson will perform an exceptional short concert at the RetroRama event on Friday, May 16th, 2014 at the Minnesota History Center in St. Paul.

For the first time Johnson will present live a selection of songs of her latest solo record “All That I Am” that was officially released in December 2013. The album, published on the Megabien Music label, sums up a lifetime of a vocal artistry on a very personal level with songs fueled by Johnson´s life experience. At the RetroRama concert Johnson will be joined by a 10-piece band in preparation of her upcoming international touring.

Johnson will also present some of the designs on the runway of the Minnesota History Center's annual RetroRama fashion show, who uses fashion as a way to explore history. This year the popular program takes on the '70s and '80s, as local designers take inspiration from the new exhibit "Sights, Sounds and Soul: Twin Cities through the lens of Charles Chamblis." Chamblis, known as "The Pictureman," took photographs of musicians, fashion models and everyday people in Minneapolis in the '70s and '80s.

 The fashion show will be emcee'd by Twin Cities phenom Fancy Ray McCloney and DJ'd by Larry "Spider" Hamilton, a popular DJ of the '70s and '80s who also appeared in photographs by Chamblis such as Cynthia Johnson.
